Colombia in the early
1990s. At the front is Alberto Perez, a young fitness trainer from Santiago de Cali, who suddenly realises he has forgotten to bring the aerobic music for his session. He grabs into his backpack and pulls out a random cassette tape of salsa music Moments later the class is moving to the hot Latin sounds crackling out of the speakers while Beto, as his friends call him, adapts classic aerobic moves to fit the music. And so it is that zumba is born. Almost 20 years later, in a small room alongside Eldon Leisure in Newcastle city centre, 30 women in fashionable sportswear gather excitedly on the dance floor. A sporty young woman turns on the music and a lively salsa sound fills the room, generating a holiday feeling among the smiling faces – a zumba class is about to start. Beto Perez’s improvised dance programme has come a long way since that small gym in Colombia. It has become a global fitness phenomenon, conquering America, Asia and Europe, and recently also reaching the North East. The cassette recorder has
turned into a CD player with impressive speakers and Beto’s
charismatic dance programme is now presented by 30-year-old Michelle
Houston, one of up to 60,000 certified zumba instructors worldwide |
