Yesterday my broadband stopped working.
Clever old BT directed  me a to a new web page telling me to pay my bill.
Fair enough. (and actually quite clever)

I had to call BT accounts and pay my bill by credit card, spoke to Dipen;
(he said his name was Dipen anyway)
What I really felt unhappy with was the way 'Dipen'  dealt with my credit card.

He insisted on me reading the card number twice, then he read it back again, and appeared to deliberately say the forth digit  incorrectly.
The first 4 numbers of a Visa card are likely to be 4543, and he said 4542.

It just didn't seem right. I then asked him to  identify himself with a BT number or call centre and he refused twice, by then he was obviously getting uncomfortable and  then he disconnected the call.

I'm not saying that he was collecting credit card numbers for his own use, but it has occurred to me  that anyone taking payments on the phone could easily make a note of the card details and sell them.

In my opinion, you are much safer using a secure online payment page.
If you don't see https in the top left of the address of the website - it's not secure, don't use it!
